Caroll Hatchett is an Actress, Singer/Songwriter, Dancer, and Choreographer extraordinaire. She is known as one of Bette Midlerās backup Singer/Dancers, the infamous āHarlettesā and has appeared in Betteās Emmy Award-winning āDiva Las Vegasā HBO Special, āThe Showgirl Must Go Onā HBO Special and numerous music tours worldwide. She’s performed with icons like Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Beyonce, and Sheila E.
Carol created a masterclass called Movement for Singers. It’s a movement/vocal program where she shares her expertise in techniques that singers can apply to their live performances, audition, and all aspects of their performance career. Carol teaches that every singing needs a performer’s toolbox. The class is an exploration to fill that toolbox. It includes movement vocabulary, use of space, and command of the stage. She works with singers on projecting, connecting, focus, and control. Singers learn about originality, showmanship, appearance, style, presence, and persona. And, much more! In our conversation, Carol shares her biggest tips for singers.
Carol’s Tips for Singers:
- Learn the vocabulary of dancing.
- Your moves don’t have to be huge to be impactful. They need to be deliberate.
- Stay present and connected during your performance.
- The most important thing is energy. You can be standing still and if your energy is powerful enough it can captivate and audience.
- Share a story and energy with your audience.
- Be sure about who you are before you go on stage.
- Consider creating an alter-ego. Invent yourself on stage.
- Be fearless and bold. Go for it!
Your Next Step
Watch yourself perform in a mirror and on video. Make notes on what you’d like to improve. Implement Carol’s tips and consider signing up for her class or other available classes in your area. To be a great talent you need to always be working on your craft. Your movement and presence on stage is a huge part of it.
