Successful Song Release Strategies in the Digital Era

Meet Allison Adams Tucker, singer, songwriter, session artist, and music teacher from San Diego, California. She’s a multi-lingual jazz vocalist with a deep love for languages and world cultures. After living in Japan and Spain, and traveling widely, for her, it’s all about the human connection. Also, her business acumen has supported a series of highly successful song releases.

Allison is on the verge of releasing her fourth album, RETRO Trilogy. Conceptually, the project is a jazz re-imagination of 3 decades of music, from the ‘70s to the ‘90s, and includes an original song. This creative undertaking confirms that Allison should not be classified exclusively as a jazz artist. Her music speaks to a much broader audience. She’ll be rolling out 3 separate EPs across different streaming platforms, and available as one CD.

Our chat on Episode 18 of the Pandemic-Proof Singer Series centered on how best to do a song release during the digital streaming era. These were the important takeaways.

This is the time to take advantage of digital streaming platforms.

  • The music industry was already at a turning point before the pandemic hit. Digital streaming platforms had started taking precedence over record labels in the promotion and distribution of music. Artistes have now been forced to jump onto “the streaming train” to remain relevant.
  • The pandemic is a blessing in disguise for artists, especially independents, because they don’t have to tour, which is very demanding. Artists can now put more energy into releasing their music digitally to gain exposure.
  • Digital platforms give artistes a lot of different options when releasing their music. If you consider social media platforms as a way of promoting music content, then the options are almost limitless.

It’s no longer enough to be artistically talented, it also important to be business savvy.

  • Even if you’re a highly talented musician, you need to have great organizational skills and business sensibility to help you manage your career. Having early experience in business, no matter how small, definitely helps.
  • It’s equally important to forge relationships with people who can take your music further like radio DJs and critiques who review music.
  • Self-releasing can make you more money than using labels to promote and distribute your songs. The flip side is it can be quite draining to the artiste.
  • There’s a lot of work that goes into promoting an album. There’s a lot of networking and reaching out to be done if you want to make your song release successful. You can’t just release your song on a digital streaming platform and wait for listenership to go up.

You can never have too much digital media presence.

  • In this digital era, it’s best to get your music everywhere if you want to build a worldwide fan base.
  • However, there’s the risk of having a dilution effect if you distribute your music across too many digital platforms.
  • Conventional wisdom says to build your presence on one platform for consistency.
  • To avoid dilution, be active in engaging your audience on each of the platforms where your music is available.
