Big Wins for Tiffy
Meet Tiffy Jane, singer/songwriter/vocal coach/blogger/vlogger. She wears a lot of creative hats, and they all fulfill her in different ways. You may have seen her as a coach on MTV’s MADE, or perhaps you caught her US Tour with her band Tiffany Jane & The Kicks. She’s won many big-time singing competitions. Her career has been full of big amazing moments like opening for Dave Matthews and Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. Nowadays, she is coaching, songwriting, and creating for her YouTube channel. With all these outlets and wins under her belt, she’s learned a thing or two about what matters. Now, amid a global pandemic, her feelings and priorities are amplified. She shared the life lessons that have brought her to a centered and joyful place in her life.
How Tiffy Measures Singing Success
1️⃣ Art needs to be created regardless of the platform or conditions surrounding you. If you’re making it happen in one way or another, whether it be online, on-stage, or in a professional studio, you’re winning!
2️⃣ When you can separate the need to make money and the need to create with your art, you’re on the right track. Both are valid needs but fulfill two very different necessities. It’s essential not to convolute the two.
3️⃣ Make sure you’re doing enough “heart” gigs balanced with profitable gigs, or you will burn out. ❤️
4️⃣ You can survive, no matter what. You don’t necessarily need what you think you need. Have faith that things will work out.
5️⃣ Success doesn’t always have to be measured by the number of gigs you have booked. If you’re burning out, it’s ok to step away from individual projects to refocus your time on something else. Success is knowing when it’s time to do that!
6️⃣ Be mindful of scarcity thinking. When you’re choosing opportunities based on fear of becoming obsolete, be reminded that opportunity is abundant. Nothing is the end-all, be-all of your career.
7️⃣ Adopt a healthy mindset knowing that the art you bring to the world is vital, but it’s not everything. Be professional, do your best, create great moments, and also remember you’re not curing cancer.
8️⃣ Consider other avenues of income and support if music can’t provide that at any given moment. It says nothing about your success or makes you a sellout. You’re a responsible adult that has financial needs.
9️⃣ Any new project you go for will probably require more work and investment than initially anticipated. Don’t let that stop you from going for it. If your reason behind doing it is strong enough, you should be willing to reconsider what “success” looks like for that venture.
🔟 Continually feed your soul and your bank account. They’re both critical to your success.
What Is Singing Success To You?
Success is what you determine it to be. Before jumping into projects, evaluate why you want to pursue it. Is it a strong enough reason to keep you going if things get tough? Determine what the real outcome is that you’re looking for. I recommend setting a SMART goal to help you achieve that outcome. It will take some reverse engineering, and it will clear the pathway to your goal and eliminate a lot of the guesswork.
🤓 SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Based. You’ll work through each of those terms to build a goal that identifies precisely what needs to be accomplished when it needs to be performed by, and how you’ll know when you’re successful.
Let’s try an example:
Specific: start a YouTube channel for posting singing videos
Measurable: account is created, information filled out, the cover art is created, the first video created, uploaded, metadata filled out, published
Attainable: have internet, computer, smartphone, email address, and a song ready to go
Relevant: long-term vision is to build a strong presence online across multiple social media platforms
Time-Based: account setup done on Wednesday, video and edit song on Thursday, upload and publish on Friday
The Path
Your singing success is entirely based on your goals and ability to achieve them. What do you want your life to look like? How will your singing impact your friends, family, fans, and the world around you? Why is this important to you? You’ll be asking and answering these questions throughout your singing career. There are no right or wrong answers. It’s up to you to decide. Try to set some goals and think through what might lie beyond those goals. The best first step towards singing success is clearing the path to allow it to come.
