Leonard Patton is an iconic staple vocalist in the San Diego jazz community. He’s recorded loads of albums with countless brilliant jazz musicians. He’s well-known for he and his band’s Guinness Record for 70 performances in 24 hours. When the pandemic came along, he was in the midst of 2 album releases. To put it mildly, he’s an energetic and determined artist. So when Covid-19 hit the scene, he was not going to be stopped. He went to work setting up a livestream studio out of his garage.

In Episode 11 of the Pandemic-Proof Singer Series, I chat with Leonard about figuring stuff out. He was, in fact, livestreaming before it was cool. As an early adapter to the Facebook Mentions app released in 2014, he began experimenting with live concerts online. For someone as busy as he is with creative projects, he’s been happy to embrace the need for innovation and technology to keep things going.
His enthusiasm has resulted in the online release of 2 albums, a 4-show virtual theater festival and a continuing stream of live performances. He told me that the process gets better and better the more you experiment with it. He’s reached the point where’s he’s ready to set up a more advanced recording studio. Leonard leased a studio space with fiber internet, a technology that uses fiber-optic cable, which amazingly can send data as fast as about 70% the speed of light. But you don’t need to go that crazy to start with.
Leonard’s 5-Part Recipe for Setting Up a Livestream Studio
- Buy a good router, not the kind your cable company tries to sell you.
- Hard-wire to your internet with a Cat 6 (ethernet cable).
- Test your internet speed. You need a minimum download speed of 3 Megabits per second. The best Internet speed for HD streaming is 5Mbps, and if you go all the way up to 4K streaming, or ultra HD, your bandwidth should start at 25Mbps. Go to https://fast.com/ to see how your’s is performing.
- Experiment with different streaming platforms. The best one for you will depend on what you want to do online. Here 7 popular and free live video streaming sites: YouTube Live, Facebook Live, Instagram Live, Periscope/Twitter, Twitch, LinkedIn Live, YouNow. And you can use multistreaming services like Restream, and you’ll be able to stream your content to any video streaming platform you choose.
- Try using multiple camera shots using a tool like Switcher Studio.
