Why did you learn to sing on Twitch? “Music is intrinsic to you, it’s not a function of your circumstances,” exclaimed Joshua Taylor. When we chatted in Episode 7 of the Pandemic-Proof Singer Series, Joshua shared with me how he sees the future of his performing career. In the midst of a pandemic and quarantine, like most of us, his live gigs have disappeared. In order to detach from the geographic dependent gig economy, he’s found hope in streaming.
FREEBIE! š Pandemic-Proof your singing career by starting with your own home vocal recording studio. Don’t know what you’re doing? Here’s a free video training to get you started.

Pre-Quarantine:
Before the pandemic hit he was a gigging guitarist, singer, and songwriter based in San Diego, California. His debut solo album, About Time, was released in 2015. In 2016, he and his wife Sandi King co-founded King Taylor Project. They immediately took to the road, playing hundreds of gigs in dozens of cities in the U.S. and Mexico. He was working on a series of house shows and public performances to showcase his recently written material with his new band and build support for his sophomore solo album.
Quarantine:
He began experimenting with streaming months ago on the YouTube platform where he’d stream traditional planned sets. In between songs he’d respond to the chat. He found this to be too transmittal so he turned to the Twitch platform. Twitch is the world’s leading live streaming platform for gamers and an assortment of many other things. He’s now switched his format to creating electronic music through Ableton, fused with his live guitar performance. He’s loving the platform because it has it’s own culture, nerdy gamer jokes, and interactive experience. Check him out for yourself: Joshua Taylor Music Twitch
If you want to learn to sing on Twitch, here’s Joshua’s tips –
Learn to Sing on Twitch:
- First, decide if Twitch is the right platform for you. Once you pick your platform, that will inform your gear choices.
- Dig deep into why you want to do this. What is your artistic voice? What’s your mission or responsibility to the world?
- Create an account on Twitch. On a desktop computer, itās as easy as clicking the āsign upā button and filling out the form.
- Give your stream a name.
- Select one of the content categories from the dropdown menu.
- Pick the camera you want to use.
- Share a link to your stream via apps you have on your phone.
- Press the āstart streamā button, and youāll be online.
What You’ll Need:
- To understand the gear you need, look at the signal chain. The end is your listener’s ears. The beginning is your mouth and instrument.
- Choose software to use for live streaming on Twitch. Joshua recommends OBS Studio ā The top choice for many novice content creators, OBS Studio is a free, open-source streaming software with cross-platform compatibility.
