Life is precious and we only get one shot at it. Nevertheless, many of us are spending our life merely passing the time until this pandemic comes to an end. It’s hard to stay motivated when you’ve lost so much. I won’t sugar-coat it either. This could get worse before it gets better. If we’re not careful with ourselves, we can become stuck and paralyzed with overwhelm. If you feel this way, you’re not alone. In my heartfelt discussion with Steph Johnson, she explained that “we’re living in impossible times” but we can learn to sing through a crisis by changing our thinking and doing.

In Episode 13 of the Pandemic-Proof Singer Series, you’ll meet Steph. She’s an award-winning singer/guitarist, recording artist, and captivating performer. She blends jazz, soul, funk, and blues like no other.
Steph also co-founded and is now Executive and Music Director of the Voices of Our City Choir, whose members are experiencing homelessness. The choir is a nonprofit that provides community and case management and has helped find housing for 60 of its 250 members. They’ve been the focus of the documentary “The Homeless Chorus Speaks” on PBS. They recently performed on America’s Got Talent, where they received the Golden Buzzer, which means – they’re given a straight pass to the live shows.

To say the least, this was an epic event for their organization and it’s singers. Their joy quickly turned to sadness when the Covid-19 pandemic hit and complicated their return to the show. And worse, in June they lost their beloved co-founder Nina Leilani Deering in a car crash.
Learn to sing through crisis
Prior to all this happening, Steph had been sick with pneumonia/bronchitis for 7 grueling months. To bring herself back to health she made some epic shifts in her lifestyle. She altered nearly all the habits in her life to align them with total wellness. She credits this as the change-agent that has kept her resilient in the midst of hardship and tragedy. She shared in detail what her daily practices are and believes they can help. Our music community can learn to sing through crisis, heal, and move forward.
Steph’s Habits:
- Morning routine – Before email or any social media she enjoys coffee or tea followed by meditation time. She then writes down 10 statements of gratitude. One by one, she holds them to her heart, reads them aloud, and declares out loud, “thank you, thank you, thank you” for each. She finishes by writing down affirmations for the day.
- Daily outdoor exercise.
- Prayer
- Sobriety
- Clean-eating
- Supplements
- Rest
Your Next Step Forward:
Begin picking up the pieces of life. Learn to sing through it and music will remain a constant remedy. Write songs and practice more. Research the many financial aid resources available. She says to listen to your body and trust your gut. Continuously breathe through the difficult moments to realign with your mission. Focus on who you are.
I’ll be sharing free resources continuously that may help keep you singing. If you’d like to work with me personally, book a consultation call with me here.
In addition to Steph’s priceless encouragement, my most immediate piece of advice is to begin building your at-home vocal recording studio. Much of what we will do will be virtual for a while. If you want to work-from-home as a singer, record your songs, make YouTube, Instagram, or TikTok videos, you’ll need to learn to do this.
Start simple with what you have and build from there. If you need help, I’ve created a free video for you that’ll make this super simple to get started.
Your opportunity is coming. Be ready for it. Pandemic-proof your singing career.
